Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation Announces Major Caregiver Support Initiative Thanks to Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation™ Grant

Abbotsford, BC — Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF) is proud to announce a new caregiver support initiative made possible through $300,000 in funding from the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation that will strengthen support for family caregivers across the Fraser Valley region.

Through this initiative, FVHCF will work in partnership with Fraser Health Authority and community organizations to develop and expand caregiver-focused supports across Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs.

The project will focus on supporting family caregivers through a combination of group-based programming, caregiver navigation services, community outreach and practical assistance designed to reduce caregiver stress and improve well-being.

Supports offered through the initiative may include:

  • Peer support and caregiver connection groups
  • Mental health and caregiver resilience workshops
  • Navigation and transition support for caregivers interacting with hospital and community programs
  • Digital and print caregiver resources and toolkits
  • Urgent and planned respite support
  • Transportation assistance to medical appointments and caregiver-related services
  • Accessibility supports such as translation, child-minding and culturally responsive resources
  • Community engagement and outreach in underserved and rural areas

A key focus of the initiative will include culturally sensitive support for First Nations caregivers in the Hope region, developed in collaboration with community and health partners.

The initiative is expected to directly support hundreds of caregivers throughout the Fraser Valley, while indirectly benefitting many more individuals and families connected to the caregiving journey.

The Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation helps Canadian charitable organizations fund critical programs and resources for family caregivers – the more than eight million Canadians who provide unpaid care to family members and others facing illness, disability, mental health challenges, or aging-related needs.

“Family caregivers are often the invisible backbone of our healthcare system,” said FVHCF Executive Director Liz Harris. “This funding allows us to work alongside Fraser Health Authority and community partners to provide meaningful, practical and compassionate support to caregivers who are too often navigating these challenges alone.”

Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation remains dedicated to raising funds for essential equipment, programs and initiatives that improve healthcare throughout the Fraser Valley communities served by Fraser Health Authority.
